Art has always a kind of therapy for me. If your mind is in chaos, the process helps to switch it off or channels that energy into your work.
Making art was my first love. When I was a teenager, I spent many hours locked away in my bedroom making stuff. Sometimes into the early hours of the morning drawing, painting, writing poems, sewing, collaging. Not making anything in particular or anything spectacular, just creating for something to do and as a way to channel my energy. I went through an artistic drought in my early 20’s, brought on by self doubt and a heavy bought of depression and stopped making for over a decade.
But like any first love, it’s hard to forget. It simmered away until recent years and now i’m rekindling that joy. Creating without self judgement and concentrating on the pleasure of play and process.
I find inspiration from all around; when walking my dog Benny through my neighbourhood, or from treasures found on a wild and wind-swept Nova Scotian beach. Often taking photos of beautiful landscape or intriguing objects, in hope to use in my work at a later date.
I’m a member of Dartmouth Visual Arts Society and we exhibit work locally a few times a year. I have also had work in the Preshrunk Show at the Argyle Fine Art Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
